Most commonly referred to as diode, intense pulsed light (IPL) or pulsed dye, non-ablative lasers pass varying colors and strengths of light through the skin without injury to the skin surface. The light source is concentrated to target its power deep down into the dermis to treat acne, veins and discolorations. Non-ablative lasers have also shed some light on rejuventation by improving skin tone and texture, and are also used in permanent hair removal.
Pros: There's minimal to no downtime and very little discomfort.
Cons: It may take multiple treatments and results can be inconsistent. Not all non-ablative lasers are safe for all complexions.
LASERS - ABOUT THE PROCEDURE
In most cases, non-ablative laser treatments require no anesthesia. But if you are someone who finds the snap of the laser too much to bear, you might ask your doctor to prescribe a numbing cream that you apply prior to your appointment to make treatment more tolerable. Another option for patients is a self-directed flow of compressed cool air to the treatment area. This type of chilling comfort is a standard in most leading laser centers. Depending on the treatment and the region being treated, it may take from a few moments to an hour. Protective goggles for the patient and the technician are a must. Following treatment you are good to go, but don't forget to protect treated areas from the sun. You may have the appearance of a mild sunburn that can be camouflaged with cosmetics or soothed with a topical cream or ointment.
Ablative laser procedures to resurface the skin usually are outpatient surgery but may include an overnight stay if performed in conjunction with other procedures. It requires prep time, anesthesia and recovery before you are released to go home.
LASERS - THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
With any laser treatment, it is best to avoid sun exposure two weeks prior to treatment, during the course of treatment and for as long as your doctor recommends after treatment is complete. Lasers react to pigment, and if your skin has excess pigment, you risk the potential for burns. Unprotected sun exposure may or may not have contributed to your condition, but it can certainly affect your results.
In addition, some treatments require preparation of the skin in advance. For example, don't wax, tweeze or epilate before laser hair removal. Two or three days before the procedure, shave the area to be treated and allow it to grow to a stubble. With non-ablative rejuvenation treatments, you may want to consider microdermabrasion or a chemical peel just prior to laser treatment to enhance the light's ability to pass through the skin.
Ablative lasers have additional considerations, many similar to those of surgery. You may be restricted from taking certain medications, herbs and vitamins that inhibit healing and advised to stop smoking. In addition, whether ablative resurfacing is your only treatment or it is part of a surgical rejuvenation, your doctor may request medical clearnace from a primary care physician to be certain you have no underlying health conditions that could be compromised by anesthesia.
